What are castor bean glasses?
First of all, what are eco glasses?
Well eco-friendly, or biobased glasses, are eyeglasses with frames designed from bio-sourced, sustainable material. This can include glasses made of oak wood, from recycled materials, or those created using 3D printing and a sustainable manufacturing process, or in the case of Horus X eco glasses frames, castor bean.
Castor oil comes from the castor beans of a small tropical tree native to Ethiopia. However, the plant is increasingly common, and can be found far and wide both inside and outside of East Africa, including India.
Once harvested, the beans are crushed to produce the castor oil which is then extracted for multiple uses.
Why sustainable glasses made from castor beans are the responsible, eco-friendly eyewear choice
Cultivation of castor oil is mainly done in India, on land with poor soil. Planting is done during the monsoon season and the beans are harvested throughout the year.
Importantly, the production of castor oil doesn’t impact local communities, contribute to deforestation or affect subsistence agriculture, making it an ethically responsible choice.
Castor isn’t a demanding tree and its cultivation is profitable to the farmers who harvest it. That means that it’s not just good for the planet but it’s a choice that reflects an appreciation for the value of the people harvesting it ethically and responsibly.
When castor beans are ground there’s no waste as both parts of the bean are used:
- 💧 Castor oil (45%)
- 🪴 Castor meal (55%), a natural fertilizer
Overall, castor bean’s cultivation and production have a very low carbon footprint.
It’s an easy material to work with and (bonus points!) can be recycled and reused, in addition to it being biosourced, ethical and responsible.
